Bonjour! It's time for another French beauty post. This time I'm looking at a cult beauty classic by Nuxe - rêve de miel lip balm.
Nuxe is one of those brands that you see in the fancy pharmacies around Paris. The brand was founded in the early 1990s and since then has had a few products gain cult status. The founder Aliza Jabès was a graduate of the Paris Institute of Political Studies and holder of an MBA in Marketing & Finance. She decided to try and create a brand that fused luxury and Nature, using a 'pharmaceutical approach' based on innovation, evaluation, accessibility and sensory experience. Their most famous product by far is Huile Prodigieuse, which was released almost 2 decades before the current trend for dry oils we are seeing now. It has a legendary cult status with many chic and fashionable individuals swearing by it, and it is almost always included magazines as a summer essential. Another cult product is Rêve de Miel lip balm.
In terms of texture, this is more like a thick, goopy paste than most lip balms. Even though it contains a lot of oils (honey, sunflower, musk rose and almond) as well as shea butter, it goes on mostly matt. It feels slightly heavier than other lip balms to wear, but it is not unpleasantly sticky. It will go on under lipstick, or by itself. It is non comedogenic, so no need to worry about blemishes around your mouth. It is also paraben and mineral oil free.
This stuff tastes incredible by the way. They use grapefruit essence which mixes with the honey and comes through in a way that is totally delicious. Because they use natural products, this does not taste like those fake citrus flavours you may associate with cheap lip balms or even with some types of sweet, it is soft and subtle with a very gentle citrus zing. If an upmarket restaurant made a pudding that tasted this way it would be a bestseller. It makes it very difficult to stop licking your lips, but it will make you totally kissable!
But does it work? Yes! Look - my lips have always been a disaster area. I chew them, I used to play woodwind instruments, and at the merest sight of cold or dry weather they would chap. Consequently I have always favoured lipgloss and balm over lipstick because I was worried it would reveal my scaly reptilian lips. Now, however, my lips are actually soft and smooth! Even during the recent heatwave in Paris, they didn't dry out once whilst using this. I even use it as part of my night time routine, and wake up with seriously soft lips. I hope it will continue through the winter. The product is tested for efficacy in Canadian winters, so I'm sure it will stand up to the challenge.
The brand tries to be environmentally conscious as well as health and beauty conscious. Appropriate for a brand that utilises the best of nature. Nuxe's eco-design commitment means this 50ml jar is lighter than previous incarnations and now uses recycled materials. The matt glass jar will still look stylish and simple on your dressing table. The bok also contains no information leaflet as they print all the information directly onto the box with mostly vegetable based inks (in multiple languages too). I think it looks really cool too. So thumbs up for making an effort to help the environment.
Overall this is a great product and I highly recommend it if you are looking for a luxurious but simple way to treat dry lips. I'm quite impressed by what the whole Nuxe range offers, and if it is all as effective as this lip balm I will definitely be buying more.
